The rutting is one of the most impressive natural spectacles we have on the island. Sierra de La SagraFrom mid-September and during October, male deer fight for territory, gather groups of females, and try to reproduce.
It is known as such because male deer emit really powerful bellows, which can be heard from a great distance, and which serve to warn other males that they are covering a certain territory, and to warn other males that they are not welcome.
During this time of year it is a real treat to be able to watch the sets, listen to the bellowing in the middle of nature, and watch the behaviour of the males and females. Occasionally, there are confrontations between males disputing a territory or a group of females, for which they use their antlers, which they clash fiercely until one of the two males withdraws from the dispute.
Thanks to our guided 4×4 routes we can observe these sets and behaviours very closely, being privileged spectators of this natural phenomenon. In addition, we recommend listening to the bellowing in the middle of the night, when the deer are still bellowing "accompanied" in their territory, and you can feel the tension and exhaustion from so much continuous effort.
We recommend you to live this experience at least once in your life, and to do so, we offer you a special "berrea" packageto spend a weekend at Molino Saúco, including several guided 4×4 trips, and a night listening in the middle of nature.
We recommend this activity to anyone who has not yet experienced this exciting spectacle, and especially to nature photography enthusiasts.
UpdateOn Sunday 25th September we were lucky enough to welcome a group of photographers and nature lovers from the Comarca de Húescar to enjoy the rutting season. Among other attendees, we were lucky to have @juanmababa who posted a video summary of the experience on his Instagram channel, @casateconmigo.es and @mgt.photo who also posted photos on their social media profiles. It was a real luxury to have this group of photographers.
